St. Scholastica Women’s Hockey Falls 3-1 at Eau Claire
UPDATE: St. Scholastica’s women’s hockey team suffered a 3-1 defeat against UW-Eau Claire in a nonconference match on Sunday, November 5, 2023. With only 1:57 left on the clock, Lyndi Schubert scored a power play goal, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong performance from the Blugolds.
The Blugolds dominated the game, outshooting the Saints 43-17, and held a 1-0 lead deep into the third period. Schubert’s late goal briefly narrowed the deficit to 2-1, but UWEC sealed the game with an empty netter, marking a disappointing outcome for St. Scholastica.
In net, Makenzie Cole delivered an impressive performance, making 40 saves for the Saints, who now sit at 3-5-1 this season. The team will look to rebound as they return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a crucial home-and-home series against Hamline starting this Friday in Duluth.
In the men’s hockey arena, St. Scholastica faced a tough challenge at the Superior Showdown held at Wessman Arena. The Saints left with no victories from two games, losing 5-0 to Lawrence on Friday and 5-2 to Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday.
On Friday night, Lawrence’s goalie Owen Carlson shut out the Saints, stopping 26 shots, while the Vikings showcased their scoring depth with five different players finding the net. Kaeden Edstrom managed 20 saves for St. Scholastica.
The following day, the Saints showed resilience, with Evan Pahos scoring on a power play and Luke McCarthy adding another goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period. However, Wisconsin-Superior responded with three unanswered goals, two of which came on power plays, sealing the game for the hosts.
Edstrom was again in net for the Saints, recording 33 saves. With a current record of 3-5-1, the men’s team will also face Hamline this Friday, marking their final series of the calendar year 2025.
Fans and supporters are eager to see how both teams will bounce back as they prepare for their upcoming games. Stay tuned for the latest updates as St. Scholastica aims to improve their standings in the MIAC.
