Sacramento Seeks Urgent Public Feedback on New Sound Policies
UPDATE: The City of Sacramento is urgently requesting public feedback on its new Community Sound Management Framework, aiming to modernize how entertainment sound is regulated in the city. This initiative, developed by Sound Music Cities, is a direct response to growing community demands for change, following over 1,100 survey responses and insights from the Sacramento Music Census.
The city’s framework proposes significant adjustments, focusing on integrating Sound Impact Plans with event permits and appointing a dedicated official to maintain consistency across departments. Don Pitts, president of Sound Music Cities, highlighted that residents are eager for improvements in sound management, which directly affects their quality of life.
Key strategies in the drafted framework include enhanced communication efforts, strict enforcement of source-based sound measurement, and a comprehensive approach to managing low-frequency sounds, aimed at reducing bass complaints from nearby residents. Megan Van Voorhis, director of Convention and Cultural Services, emphasized the goal of balancing residents’ peace with the vibrancy of Sacramento’s creative scene.
Community meetings are scheduled for December 8, 9, and 10, 2023, providing an essential platform for locals, venue owners, and event organizers to share their thoughts on the proposed sound policies. Dustin Hollingsworth, assistant director of Convention and Cultural Services, confirmed that community input will be instrumental in shaping the framework, set for adoption in 2026.
All relevant documents, including the full Community Sound Management Framework, the Sacramento Music Census, and a detailed sound policy review, are accessible on the City’s official website. This is an urgent call for public engagement—Sacramento residents are encouraged to make their voices heard as the city navigates this pivotal transformation in entertainment sound management.
