Richmond Police Identify Victim of Deadly Shooting as Josue Cornejo

UPDATE: The victim of a deadly shooting in Richmond has been identified as 23-year-old Josue Cornejo, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Cornejo was shot on November 17, 2023, in the Iron Triangle area, marking a grim addition to the city’s escalating violence.

Authorities report that dispatchers received alerts from a gunshot detection system in the 1400 block of Bissell Avenue near Marina Way around 5:55 a.m.. Multiple witnesses also called in to report hearing gunfire. When police arrived, they found Cornejo suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Richmond police have indicated that Cornejo’s death is part of a troubling trend, being one of four homicides investigated this year. However, critical details about the shooting remain unclear. Police have not confirmed whether the shots were fired from a passing vehicle or if an assailant confronted Cornejo directly on the street. Additionally, there is no information available on a possible motive or any suspects at this time.
