URGENT UPDATE: A massive fire at the American House assisted living facility in Southgate, Michigan, has displaced over 80 senior citizens late Friday night. The fire erupted around 10 p.m., forcing residents to flee with only the clothes on their backs. Fortunately, all residents and staff were accounted for, escaping without severe injuries.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as flames shot high into the air, prompting a swift response from local emergency services. “There were like seven or eight different fire trucks here, and the flames were just shooting way above these trees,” said Karen Richardson, whose aunt, Joyce Richardson, was among the evacuees. Joyce left the facility with minimal belongings, wearing only a nightgown and bathrobe, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The Southgate Police released body camera footage showing officers assisting with the evacuation as smoke filled the building. Joe Marsh, public safety director for Southgate, noted the unique challenges faced during the evacuation due to the residents’ mobility issues and memory care needs. “Challenges because of the mobility issues that we encounter from several of the residents,” he remarked.

Community volunteers quickly mobilized to help with the evacuation, including retired police officers who drove transport vehicles to relocate residents to a temporary center. “Citizen volunteers came in to assist us,” Marsh added, emphasizing the community’s rapid response to the crisis.

Among those affected was Jodi Portice, whose father lost everything in the fire, including his medication. Fortunately, she was able to replace some prescriptions through the VA in Ann Arbor. “Detroit is open all day, as well as Ann Arbor, and since all his meds were there, I was able to get everything,” Portice explained.

The Southgate Senior Center has been collecting donations for the displaced residents but announced on Saturday afternoon that no further donations are currently needed. Despite the devastation, Richardson expressed gratitude for the safety of the residents. “Things can get replaced, people can’t,” she said, reflecting on the emotional impact of the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire as the community rallies to support displaced residents. As this situation develops, officials are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist those in need.
