BREAKING: Both the Niwot and Mead volleyball teams faced early exits from the state tournament, held at the Denver Coliseum, on Thursday. The stakes were high, but both teams fell short in their first-round matches, leaving fans and players reeling.

In the 5A class, No. 12 Niwot battled No. 5 Rampart but ultimately succumbed with a final score of 3-1. The Cougars lost the first two sets decisively at 25-15 and 25-19, before making a brief comeback in the third set with a score of 25-21. However, the Rams sealed the match with a crushing 25-14 win in the fourth set. This defeat comes on the heels of Niwot’s impressive upset victory as the No. 17 seed over Pueblo West in the 5A Region 8 tournament. With a season record now at 19-7, Niwot will await their next matchup against either No. 3 Rock Canyon or No. 6 Ralston Valley in the consolation round.

Meanwhile, in the 4A competition, No. 9 Mead also struggled against No. 8 Battle Mountain. The Mavericks dropped the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22, before narrowly clinching the third set at 25-23. However, Battle Mountain ultimately triumphed in the fourth set with a score of 25-22, ending Mead’s hopes for the tournament. The Mavericks, now with a record of 17-9, had previously showcased their skills by defeating Conifer and Steamboat Springs in their own regional matches, driven by the leadership of senior cousins Rylee Klatt and Elena Gomez.

As both teams exit the tournament, the community reflects on the determination and grit displayed throughout the season. Fans are left wondering how the teams will regroup and prepare for future competitions. Stay tuned for updates on their journey and upcoming matches as the consolation brackets unfold.
