Nick Mangold, Jets Legend, Dies at 41 After Kidney Disease Battle
UPDATE: Nick Mangold, the legendary New York Jets offensive lineman, has tragically passed away at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease, the team confirmed. The seven-time Pro Bowl center had been undergoing dialysis treatments since spring 2023, highlighting a lengthy battle with chronic health issues.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to the Jets community, Mangold revealed, “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.” This poignant message underscores the urgency and gravity of his condition, which had become increasingly dire.
Mangold, who was drafted by the Jets as a first-round pick out of Ohio State in 2006, left an indelible mark on the franchise. He played a vital role in the Rex Ryan-era playoff teams and was recognized as one of the league’s elite centers. He missed only four starts in his first ten seasons, showcasing his remarkable durability and commitment to the game.
Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed profound sadness in a statement, saying, “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.” His words reflect the immense impact Mangold had both on and off the field.
Former head coach Rex Ryan, visibly emotional, reacted to the news live on ESPN. “It’s brutal, such a great young man that I had the pleasure to coach,” he said, recalling a moment when Mangold insisted on playing through injury in Ryan’s final game. “He was going to play for me,” Ryan remembered, emphasizing Mangold’s unwavering dedication.
Mangold’s accolades are numerous; he was selected to the Pro Bowl every year from 2008 to 2015, except for 2012, and earned First Team All-Pro honors twice. Jets vice chairman Christopher Johnson remarked, “Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership. His contributions on the field were extraordinary — but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”
In a touching tribute, Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor on June 2, 2022, alongside fellow Jets legends D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Darrelle Revis. This honor underscores his lasting legacy within the organization and among fans.
The Jets organization extends their deepest condolences to Mangold’s wife, Jenny, and their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte — as well as to his extended family and friends. “Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet,” Johnson concluded, marking the profound loss felt throughout the Jets community and beyond.
As tributes pour in from fans and former teammates, the impact of Mangold’s legacy will resonate for years to come. His fight against kidney disease not only highlights the importance of health awareness but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of a beloved athlete who dedicated his life to the game he loved.
