UPDATE: With flu season rapidly approaching, New York State’s Health Commissioner, Jim McDonald, M.D., M.P.H., is stressing the importance of vaccination and health precautions to protect communities this year. As we enter this critical time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts a moderate flu season ahead.

In an urgent announcement from Albany, N.Y., McDonald emphasized the timeline of respiratory illnesses that typically spike during the fall and winter months, starting with RSV in October, followed closely by flu cases. “Flu seasons are really hard to predict,” he explained, referring to the unpredictability of past seasons.

Health experts are reiterating that the best defense against the flu is to get vaccinated. “The flu vaccine is crucial,” McDonald stated. Alongside the flu shot, he urged the public to practice good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, especially for children. “If your child is sick, postpone playdates,” he advised.

As part of the broader public health strategy, McDonald highlighted the significance of the COVID-19 vaccine and the newly anticipated RSV vaccine, which could drastically reduce hospital admissions for infants—one of the most vulnerable groups during flu season. “RSV is one of the leading causes of hospital admissions for infants,” he noted.

The commissioner also raised alarms about misinformation circulating online. “Too many of us are listening to unqualified individuals and making critical health decisions based on that,” he cautioned, urging people to consult their healthcare providers for reliable advice.

As symptoms for flu, COVID, and RSV can often resemble one another—cough, fever, and runny nose—McDonald emphasized the importance of paying attention to one’s body. “If your body is speaking, we should always listen,” he advised.

In light of this, he recommended staying hydrated, eating nutritious foods, and using medications like Tylenol for fever relief. For anyone experiencing severe symptoms or difficulties breathing, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial.

As flu season unfolds, public health officials are preparing for what may lie ahead. Stay vigilant and informed, and prioritize vaccinations to help protect yourself and your loved ones.
