Massachusetts Faces Cold Blast, Freezing Rain Risk This Weekend
URGENT UPDATE: Massachusetts is bracing for a cold and blustery Friday, with forecasters warning of a potential freezing rain risk this weekend. The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will remain in the mid-40s across much of the state, but gusty winds will make it feel significantly colder.
As of Friday, January 27, 2023, Boston is expected to reach a high of 46 degrees and drop to a low of 29 degrees overnight. In Hyannis, temperatures will peak at 45 degrees with a low of 31 degrees. Meanwhile, Pittsfield could see highs barely reaching 40 degrees, along with potential rain and snow showers in the afternoon. Springfield and Worcester will enjoy mostly sunny skies, with highs of 46 degrees and 43 degrees respectively.
As night falls, temperatures across the state are projected to plunge into the low and mid-20s. Coastal areas may experience slightly milder temperatures, but the cold front will dominate overall.
Looking ahead to Saturday, residents can expect sunshine in the morning, but clouds will roll in by the afternoon. The National Weather Service alerts that precipitation is likely to begin Saturday night, potentially impacting those in higher terrains with freezing rain. However, conditions are not expected to become dangerously icy as temperatures rise overnight.
Rain is forecasted to taper off by Sunday morning, with temperatures initially reaching the 50s before plummeting into the 30s in the afternoon. Wind gusts could escalate to 40 mph by late morning, creating hazardous conditions for travel and outdoor activities.
Residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and prepare for potential disruptions. This developing situation highlights the need for caution as Massachusetts transitions into a cold and potentially icy weekend.
