Major Renovations Completed at MSP Airport’s Terminal 1
UPDATE: Major renovations at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s Terminal 1 have just been completed, bringing a modern and brighter look just in time for the holiday travel season. This significant transformation, managed by Delta Air Lines, involved a staggering $242 million investment aimed at enhancing the passenger experience for millions of travelers.
Officials from the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) announced that the renovations, which began in the fall of 2023, have resulted in a “unified and modern design” across six of the airport’s seven concourses and 75 Delta gate hold rooms. With Delta holding a remarkable 70% market share at MSP, these upgrades are crucial for catering to a growing number of passengers.
Brian Ryks, CEO of MAC, emphasized the importance of these changes, stating, “In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that elevates the passenger experience — from the checkpoints to the gate areas.” He also highlighted Delta’s role as a valuable partner in delivering these modern spaces that enhance MSP’s award-winning customer service.
Among the key improvements, travelers will notice new terrazzo or carpet flooring, updated wall finishes, and energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. The renovations also included a complete refresh of Delta’s gate areas featuring new seating, carpeting, counters, and signage. Notably, the addition of “dynamic gate signs” allows travelers to view flight and destination information swiftly, enhancing navigation throughout the concourse.
This renovation coincides with the completion of a ten-year effort to modernize all pre-security areas at MSP, which included upgrades to checkpoints, ticketing, and baggage claim. The MAC invested $182.5 million in the Airport Modernization Program, with Delta contributing an additional $60 million to the initiative.
As holiday travelers prepare for busy flights, these upgrades promise to significantly improve the overall airport experience. With modern aesthetics and improved functionality, MSP is set to become a standout airport for both domestic and international travelers.
