URGENT UPDATE: Maeve McErlane made her highly anticipated return to the basketball court, playing for the CU Buffs in an exhibition game against Colorado School of Mines on Wednesday. This marked her first game appearance in 20 months after recovering from a torn labrum in her hip.

For McErlane, a junior guard, the moment was nothing short of exhilarating. “It was just surreal,” she said, expressing gratitude for her supportive teammates and coaching staff who have helped her through this challenging journey. The game, while unofficial, held significant emotional weight for McErlane, who previously played at DePaul before transferring to CU.

Despite the Buffs dominating the matchup, McErlane’s shooting stats were less than stellar—she scored just 2 points and went 1-for-8 from the floor, including 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. However, the support from her bench and coaches kept her spirits high. “I was missing some shots, but the bench and the coaches were lifting me up,” she noted.

CU head coach JR Payne praised McErlane’s resilience and positive attitude, stating, “Anytime someone’s been out, it’s wonderful to see them back on the floor, especially a kid like Maeve.” Her journey back to health has inspired not only her teammates but also the coaching staff.

McErlane, who last played an official game on March 8, 2024, against Seton Hall, has been a steady presence throughout the offseason, averaging 4.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists during her last season at DePaul. Now, as one of ten newcomers to the Buffs, she is eager to contribute to the team’s success.

Looking ahead, the Buffs are poised to leverage their talented roster of guards, including Kennedy Sanders, Desiree Wooten, and Anna Gooden. The coaching staff’s strategy for integrating McErlane into the mix will be crucial as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Reflecting on her experience, McErlane shared her excitement about the season ahead. “I’m just really excited to see what this team can do this year,” she remarked. With a supportive environment encouraging every player to take their shot, McErlane feels empowered and determined to make her mark.

As McErlane continues to settle into her role with the Buffs, fans can expect her to bring a blend of experience and enthusiasm to the court. The anticipation builds as the team gears up for an exciting season, and McErlane’s journey back to basketball will surely be one to watch.
