Local Artist Cheryl Jean Husby Passes Away at 76, Remembered Fondly
URGENT UPDATE: Renowned artist and beloved community member Cheryl Jean Husby has passed away peacefully at the age of 76, surrounded by family at St. Luke’s Hospital on October 14, 2025. Her vibrant spirit and creativity touched many lives, making her loss profoundly felt throughout the community.
Born in Minneapolis on December 30, 1948, Cheryl was a lifelong artist and advocate for community involvement. She graduated from U-High in 1966, later earning her B.F.A. in 1983, M.A. in 1984, and M.F.A. in 1986 from the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Cheryl’s passion for art was paralleled only by her love for family and friends. She and her husband, Bob Husby, married during a summer break, living above a bakery while building their pottery business, Husby Pottery. Their journey included adventures across the country and winters spent in the Florida Keys.
Cheryl was renowned for her vibrant social gatherings, where she hosted everything from New Year’s celebrations to monthly potlucks. She was particularly celebrated for her culinary skills, including her famous apple pie, and her ability to bring joy to every occasion. Her commitment to her family was evident in her enthusiastic support for her children and grandchildren, notably her grandsons, Zane and Noah Draper.
In addition to her artistic accolades, including 1st place in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival, Cheryl was deeply involved in community service. She served on boards for the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance, showcasing her dedication to enhancing the cultural fabric of her community.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Bob; son, Seth Draper (Tracy); daughter, Elissa Husby; sisters, Barbara Swango and JoAnn Mancuso; brother, George Chergosky; and a multitude of loving cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teams at St. Luke’s, Mayo Clinic, Benedictine, and Ecumen Lakeshore for their compassionate care during this time.
Visitation will occur at 10:00 AM on November 5, 2025, at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior Street, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM and a reception. Flowers are welcome, and donations in Cheryl’s honor can be made to the Depot Foundation and Duluth Preservation Alliance.
Family and friends are encouraged to share their condolences and memories online at SunriseFuneralHomeandCemetery.com. Cheryl Jean Husby will be remembered not only for her artistic talents but also for the warmth and joy she brought to those around her.
