Langdon Area/Munich Clinches Region 2B Volleyball Title, Heads to State

UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, defending state champions Langdon Area/Munich clinched the Region 2B volleyball title on October 26, 2023, at Devils Lake, setting the stage for another state tournament run. The Cardinals dominated early but faced a brief challenge, ultimately securing victory with set scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-13.

The match took a tense turn when Park River/Fordville-Lankin‘s Bailee Seim delivered a pivotal kill, putting Langdon behind 7-5 in the third set. However, the Cardinals swiftly regained control, launching a powerful rally to take a commanding 19-9 lead. Coach Rich Olson praised the team’s defense, stating, “We were sparked by our defense tonight.”

Highlighting the team’s synergy, Olson credited Liv Prouty, a sophomore serve specialist, for her impactful performance. The Cardinals displayed exceptional teamwork, with Kemi Morstad sealing the title with a decisive block.

Despite the loss, Park River coach Nicole Wollangk acknowledged her team’s competitive spirit, stating, “We know we can compete and play at that level.” She was later named Region 2B Coach of the Year. Park River/Fordville-Lankin, now 22-14, aims for redemption as they prepare for the state qualifier tournament on Saturday.

The victory boosts Langdon Area/Munich’s record to 36-5, as they aim for a repeat state title under the new three-class system. Senior player Raeleigh Ratzlaff expressed pride in her team’s talent and camaraderie, emphasizing their hard work during postseason play.

In a parallel match, Benson County secured a 3-1 victory over New Rockford-Sheyenne in the third-place game, paving their path to the state tournament. Benson County will face the Region 1 runner-up at 5 p.m. Saturday at the University of Jamestown.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming state tournament, fans and players alike are eager to see if Langdon Area/Munich can continue their winning streak and capture another championship title.
