Kutztown Students Unveil “Footloose” Musical Nov. 21-22
URGENT UPDATE: The Kutztown Area School District is set to electrify audiences with its production of “Footloose the Musical” on November 21 and 22. This high-energy show, featuring iconic hits like “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” promises to bring the beloved 1984 film to life, captivating both young and old.
The musical follows the journey of city teen Ren McCormack, portrayed by Elliot Johnson, who moves from Chicago to the small town of Bomont. Upon arrival, he discovers that dancing has been outlawed by the local preacher. Determined to challenge this ban, Ren rallies his classmates to reignite the joy of music and dancing, offering a compelling narrative about freedom, friendship, and healing.
This production boasts a staggering 70 students from grades 6-12, encompassing not just the cast but also the crew, pit musicians, sound technicians, and stage coordinators. Director LeAnne Zettlemoyer emphasized the transformative power of musical theatre, stating,
“The story of Footloose is so much more than some teenagers wanting to dance. It’s about relationships, letting go of the past, and the healing and forgiveness that can happen when we take the time to listen to one another.”
The shows will take place at the Kutztown High School auditorium with performances on November 21 at 7 p.m. and November 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, available online at KASD Ticket Sales or at the auditorium lobby one hour before each show.
A special event on November 20 will kick off the excitement, featuring a free dinner for senior citizens at 4:30 p.m., followed by a preview show at 6 p.m. for the first 150 reservations made at 610-683-7361 ext. 7555.
Students and volunteers have collaborated extensively on this production, with parent volunteers assisting in various roles, from set design to fundraising. Zettlemoyer remarked,
“It truly takes a village! However, the audience member should be so immersed in the total experience that all of those things blend into a seamless, enjoyable evening.”
Musical pit orchestra director Dustin Shirk highlighted the involvement of both student and community musicians, ensuring an exhilarating performance. “The pit will bring a lot of energy and fun to the whole show,” Shirk stated, promising a toe-tapping experience.
Lead cast members also include Olivia Vos as Ariel Moore, Anna Stump as Rusty, and Jack Ruhmel as Willard Hewitt, among others. As senior Elliot Johnson expressed, musical theatre offers students a chance to step out of their comfort zones and truly express themselves. “I hope the audience can see how much fun we are really having,” he said.
With just days until curtain rise, excitement is building in the community. Don’t miss your chance to experience this vibrant production that truly embodies the spirit of freedom and friendship. Mark your calendars for November 21-22 at Kutztown High School!
