ICE Agents Not Patrolling San Francisco Transit, SFMTA Confirms
UPDATE: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are NOT patrolling city transit vehicles. This announcement comes amid rising concerns from the public regarding ICE’s presence on Muni buses and trains.
On October 23, 2025, the SFMTA took to social media to clarify the situation, stating, “We have received inquiries about the presence of ICE on Muni vehicles. There are no credible reports that ICE agents are boarding Muni buses.”
This urgent update follows a recent deployment of ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to Coast Guard Island in Alameda, where they were met with significant protests. Hundreds of demonstrators attempted to block access to the island, voicing their opposition to the federal presence in the Bay Area.
In a related development, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie revealed that President Donald Trump agreed to halt plans for a federal surge of law enforcement in the city after a phone conversation on Wednesday evening. Mayor Lurie, along with influential figures like Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, conveyed to Trump the importance of allowing local authorities to address crime using existing city and state resources.
The ongoing concerns about ICE’s involvement in local public transit come at a time when many residents are still reeling from fears of increased federal enforcement in their communities. The SFMTA encourages the public to report any ICE activity through the San Francisco Rapid Response Network, emphasizing the need for vigilance and community support.
As protests and local discussions continue, the situation remains fluid. Residents are urged to stay informed and engaged, as the dynamics surrounding federal law enforcement in San Francisco evolve.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, as the impact of federal policies on local communities remains a critical issue for many San Franciscans.
