UPDATE: The federal government shutdown is shaking up the Golden Gate Half Marathon in San Francisco, requiring last-minute changes to the race course. This iconic event, set for Sunday, October 15, 2023, will kick off at 6:50 a.m. at Aquatic Park and draw a sold-out crowd of 7,500 participants.

Due to federal park closures, the race will not pass through Fort Point or Hopper’s Hands, areas managed by federal authorities. “We had to scramble to plot out a new course with city officials,” said Gretchen Schoenstein, a representative from Golden State Challenge, which organizes the race. Unfortunately, the last-minute adjustments mean the course will not be certified by U.S. Track and Field officials, affecting runners who rely on this certification to qualify for major races, such as the Boston Marathon.

For many participants, including Carmen Gonzalez, who traveled from Mexico to fulfill her dream of running in San Francisco, this is a moment of excitement. “Running on the Golden Gate. Seeing the ocean and everything. It’s amazing,” she exclaimed. This marks her third time competing in the half marathon.

First-time half marathon runner Kayleigh Aquino, a former collegiate athlete, expressed her thrill about the event. “I’m stoked. I could not be more excited,” she stated. Despite the course changes, the race remains a significant event for both seasoned runners and enthusiastic newcomers.

While approximately 5% of the runners will need to defer their quest for certification, many participants, like local resident Rakesh Sharma, are focusing on the joy of the experience rather than the official timing. “The course correction is fine. It doesn’t really bother me as much,” Sharma shared.

As runners prepare to take on the 13.1-mile course ending at Ghirardelli Square, they are encouraged to embrace the unique scenery and camaraderie that defines this annual event. The top male runners are expected to finish in under 1:30:00, while female competitors aim for times below 1:40:00. A finish under 2:00:00 is considered a strong performance.

In light of the ongoing government shutdown, many local attractions and national parks have also been affected, sparking concern among residents and visitors. For details on what is open or closed, refer to local updates.

Stay tuned for further developments as the Golden Gate Half Marathon unfolds against this backdrop of uncertainty.
