Germantown Residents Face New Snow Removal Rules Starting 2026
URGENT UPDATE: Residents of Germantown will soon need to take on the responsibility of clearing snow from their own sidewalks, as the village board has voted against a new snow removal map that would have maintained full municipal services. This decision, confirmed on December 1, 2023, marks a significant shift in the village’s snow removal policy, which has been in effect since the 1950s.
In response to growing concerns over the sustainability of current snow removal services, the Germantown Department of Public Works (DPW) will reassess the sidewalk snow removal map. The board’s rejection means the current practices remain until at least winter 2026, leaving residents anxious about how this change will impact their winter mobility.
DPW Director Matt Mortwedt stated, “This is a first attempt at the map at the village board level. At the end of the day, we’ll get a map adopted, and that’ll be the plan going forward.” The revised map will be discussed again in a meeting scheduled for January 7, 2024.
The proposed changes would have shifted snow removal responsibilities to property owners for several sidewalks adjacent to homes, while maintaining municipal services for most sidewalks located near backyards. Mortwedt emphasized the necessity of these adjustments, explaining that the village is unable to keep up with snow removal on newly developed sidewalks.
Residents like Steve Thompson, who walks up to 15 miles a day with his dog Buddy, are expressing mixed feelings about the potential changes. “From my standpoint, we wouldn’t like it if they stopped plowing things like Pilgrim Road and Donges Bay Road,” he said. Many community members share his concern, as these sidewalks are vital for accessibility and connectivity within the village.
The change, should it be finalized, would take effect in mid-summer, leaving residents in suspense over the upcoming winter months. The DPW aims to have a clear plan in place by June 2024 to address community needs and maintain essential walkways.
As discussions unfold, many Germantown residents are left to wonder how this shift will affect their daily lives. The village’s commitment to re-evaluating its snow removal strategy has sparked crucial conversations about community responsibility and public services. As winter approaches, the clock is ticking for the village to finalize its plans.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, and make your voice heard during the upcoming meetings.
