Ferndale Native Lt. Col. Dane Coppini to Fly Over Chiefs-Colts Game
UPDATE: In an exciting honor, Lt. Col. Dane Coppini, a native of Ferndale, California, will perform a flyover at the upcoming Kansas City Chiefs vs. Indianapolis Colts NFL game on Sunday at 10 a.m. The event marks a special tribute as part of Military Appreciation Month, showcasing the dedication of military personnel.
Coppini, who has amassed 15 years of flying experience, is assigned to the 87th Flying Training Squadron, affectionately known as the “Red Bulls.” This Sunday, he will pilot one of four T-38C Talon jets—an essential training aircraft for Air Force pilots—during the high-profile event in Kansas City.
Coppini, currently stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, expressed excitement over this opportunity, stating, “My squadron typically requests a few flyovers each year, and this is my first.” The flyover not only highlights his achievements but also serves as an emotional connection back to his roots, reflecting the community’s support that has propelled his career.
With a distinguished military background, Coppini began his service 19 years ago as an enlisted Air Force cop before transitioning to become a pilot. His impressive journey includes multiple deployments, notably his first in Afghanistan and subsequent missions across Africa and the Middle East.
Coppini remarked on the significance of this honor, stating, “Being able to fly and train the next generation of pilots rejuvenates my passion for aviation and the military. It’s a blessing to do what I love.” His mother, Carrie Coppini, proudly shared her joy over this milestone, emphasizing the community’s pride in his accomplishments and the unwavering support from family and friends back home.
As family members prepare to watch the flyover, Carrie reflected, “We’re super proud of him. He’s just done so much in his career, and to see him honored this way is incredible.” The excitement is palpable as the family makes plans to celebrate this momentous event.
