Fatal Crash Sparks Outcry Over Traffic Chaos in Bexar County
UPDATE: A fatal crash on State Highway 211 near Potranco Road has left one person dead and three others hospitalized, igniting urgent concerns among residents in far west Bexar County about escalating traffic dangers due to rapid construction. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, as local authorities reported a surge in accidents linked to ongoing developments in the area.
Witnesses at the scene expressed their alarm over the growing number of accidents. According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the crash is just the latest in a series of alarming incidents attributed to increased traffic stemming from new construction projects. Resident Carol Penaloza stated, “They’re continuing to build, and the roads and the infrastructure, everything is under construction at the same time.”
Another local, Keith Eagle, echoed her concerns, emphasizing the inadequacy of current roadways to handle the volume of traffic. “A lot of houses and the roads and the infrastructure is just not really there to support it,” he remarked. “There’s just so much traffic flowing through here, and they keep on trying to build new things.”
Residents are also worried about reckless driving in the area. Local neighbor Edward Fuentes noted, “The speed is a little bit too high. Normally, when I’m coming in, I’m coming around 60 miles an hour. I usually have to drop down to like 40 just to allow (other drivers) to speed up in a good time.”
In response to these ongoing safety issues, Penaloza and other residents are calling for a pause in new construction until road improvements can be made. “They’ve got to slow down on the building and do the roads maybe first, or do a section at a time and get it done with,” she suggested. “It feels like they’ve just forgotten to think about the roadways out here while they’re building everything up,” Eagle added.
The community’s plea highlights a growing tension between development and safety, as the increasing number of homes and businesses has not been matched by infrastructure improvements. As this situation develops, residents are demanding immediate action from local officials to address these critical traffic concerns.
Authorities are expected to review safety protocols in the area in light of the recent fatality. Residents are urged to stay alert and report any dangerous driving behaviors as they seek to ensure the safety of their community.
This incident marks a pivotal moment for Bexar County, as residents rally for change in light of escalating traffic fatalities. The community is calling for immediate discussions with local planners to find solutions that prioritize safety alongside growth.
