East Bay Descendant of Thanksgiving Figure Shares Family Legacy
UPDATE: A local resident from Orinda, Bill Brewster, has revealed his direct lineage to a key figure in Thanksgiving history, Elder William Brewster, who played a vital role during the Pilgrims’ early days in the New World. This revelation coincides with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, highlighting the enduring legacy of the Pilgrims.
Just announced: Bill Brewster, a descendant of the influential William Brewster, is sharing his family’s remarkable story as Thanksgiving approaches. His ancestor was instrumental in the founding of Plymouth Colony after arriving at Plymouth Rock in 1620.
Historically, Elder William Brewster was a spiritual leader who guided the Pilgrims through their harrowing first winter, where half of the settlers succumbed to the harsh conditions. Bill Brewster recounts, “He wasn’t ordained, but he assumed that role,” emphasizing the importance of his ancestor’s leadership during this critical time.
The journey to America was fraught with peril. The Pilgrims faced a perilous hundred-day voyage with dwindling supplies, as they intended to establish a settlement in Virginia. Bill explains, “They were supposed to land in Virginia and start farming to pay back the investors.” However, upon landing at Plymouth, Elder William Brewster helped draft and sign the Mayflower Compact, fostering unity among the settlers.
In a recent pilgrimage to his ancestor’s home in Scrooby, England, Bill and his son, Ben, explored their roots, visiting significant historical sites including Sherwood Forest. “The Brewster manor house is still standing,” he notes, underscoring the family’s lasting connection to history.
Bill Brewster’s family tree is impressive, featuring notable relatives such as civil rights activist Angela Davis, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and actress Katherine Hepburn. “It’s a family legacy that spans generations,” he states. This Thanksgiving, many will reflect on the historical significance of Elder Brewster’s contributions, as well as the complex narratives that surround the holiday.
In a fascinating twist, Bill also shares the story of Squanto, the Native American who played a crucial role in facilitating relations between the Pilgrims and Indigenous tribes. “He helped arrange the first Thanksgiving and acted as a translator,” Bill explains, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural communication during this pivotal moment in history.
As Thanksgiving approaches, many remember a controversial moment in history: in 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt moved the holiday to the third Thursday of November to extend the shopping season. This decision, dubbed “Franksgiving,” sparked outrage and led to a split in observance across the nation. Ultimately, in 1941, Congress reinstated the fourth Thursday as the official date.
As the Brewster family prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving, Bill emphasizes the importance of understanding and honoring their heritage. “It’s a time to reflect on our past and the sacrifices made for our future,” he concludes.
This Thanksgiving, as families gather around the table, the Brewster legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the complex history that shapes this cherished holiday.
