Cooper Flagg’s NBA Debut Ends in Disappointment for Mavericks
UPDATE: In a highly anticipated debut, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg faced a challenging start to his NBA career as the Dallas Mavericks fell to the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 125-92 on October 25, 2023. Fans at the American Airlines Center witnessed a mix of excitement and disappointment as Flagg struggled to make an impact on the court.
Flagg’s debut began with promise, sprinting down the floor on his first offensive possession. He connected with Anthony Davis for a lob pass but failed to complete the dunk, a moment that set the tone for his night. The rookie ended the game with just 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting, alongside three turnovers and no assists.
“Not great,” Flagg assessed his performance post-game. “Obviously, didn’t play incredibly well, but we’ve got to move past it and focus on Friday [against the Washington Wizards].”
Despite his struggles, Flagg did manage to grab 10 rebounds, making him the fifth Dallas player to achieve a double-double in his NBA debut. However, the Mavs’ offense sputtered, and he acknowledged the need for improvement: “We just got a little stagnant.”
The game was dominated by Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who dazzled fans with an impressive 40 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who defended Flagg, added 22 points, showcasing his own prowess. “He didn’t shoot the ball well, but he seemed a lot more poised than I thought he would be,” Castle remarked about Flagg.
Davis, who led the Mavs with 22 points, reflected on Flagg’s debut: “He’s still a rookie. You start hearing all the hype, and I’m not sure if it got to him, but it’s first-game jitters. He’ll be fine.” Coach Jason Kidd supported Flagg, stating, “The stat line is not going to say that, but he did fine. He’s going to learn from this game.”
The Mavs struggled offensively, scoring only 8 points on the 19 possessions Flagg brought the ball up the floor. The team plans to adjust their strategy, incorporating forwards P.J. Washington and Davis into playmaking roles alongside Flagg.
Looking ahead, Flagg expressed optimism despite the loss: “I’m excited to keep going. Obviously, it hurts, but I’m just trying to look forward to the next one and get ready.”
As the Mavericks prepare for their next game, fans will be watching closely to see how Flagg bounces back from this rocky start. Stay tuned for further updates on his progress and the team’s performance as the season unfolds.
