‘Black Phone 2’ Dominates Box Office with $42 Million Opening
BREAKING: Blumhouse’s highly anticipated horror sequel, Black Phone 2, has stormed the box office with a spectacular opening weekend, raking in $42 million globally. This figure includes an impressive $26.5 million from North America alone, confirming its status as the #1 film this weekend.
The sequel, which premiered on October 20, 2025, surpasses the opening weekend figures of its predecessor, which debuted at $23.3 million domestically and $35.8 million worldwide. This success marks a significant turnaround for Blumhouse, especially after recent disappointments with films such as M3GAN 2.0 and Wolf Man.
Directed once again by Scott Derrickson and featuring returning stars Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Miguel Cazarez Mora, Black Phone 2 sees Hawke’s character, the child-abducting Grabber, making a chilling return through a new black phone, this time terrorizing children at a summer camp. Critics have generally responded positively, highlighting the film’s engaging narrative, which departs from the original short story by Joe Hill to present an all-new tale.
In stark contrast, Disney’s Tron: Ares has faced a steep decline, plunging 65% in North America to add just $11.1 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $54.6 million. The film’s international performance is equally concerning, earning an additional $14.1 million but failing to resonate with Chinese audiences during its opening weekend. With a new global total of $103 million, the future of the Tron franchise appears bleak.
Meanwhile, excitement builds for the upcoming limited release of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, as Netflix has yet to disclose box office figures. The film’s release is set to expand to additional theaters next weekend, potentially altering its financial outlook.
Looking ahead, October 24, 2025, is poised to be an exciting date in theaters, with the debut of Yorgos Lanthimos’ comedy Bugonia, Tina Romero’s horror film Queens of the Dead, and Chris Stuckmann’s horror debut Shelby Oaks. While the Halloween weekend lacks significant genre releases, fans can anticipate the arrival of Predator: Badlands on November 7.
As Black Phone 2 claims its place at the forefront of the horror genre, the film’s triumph offers a glimmer of hope for Blumhouse and its future projects. Stay tuned for more updates as the box office race continues to unfold!
