Austin Reaves Hits Buzzer-Beater, Lakers Edge Timberwolves 116-115
UPDATE: Austin Reaves continues to shine as he hits a buzzer-beater, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a thrilling 116-115 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on July 15, 2025. This dramatic finish capped an extraordinary night where Reaves scored 28 points and dished out 16 assists, further solidifying his status as a rising star in the league.
The Lakers, missing key stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James due to injuries, have heavily relied on Reaves, who has stepped up remarkably in recent games. Just days prior, he exploded for a career-high 51 points against the Sacramento Kings and followed that performance with 41 points against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Reaves’ game-winner came with just 6.6 seconds left on the clock. After receiving an inbound pass near center court, he evaded a double team from All-Defensive players Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert, drove into the lane, and released a floater that secured the win. Reaves described the moment, stating he “blacked out” after making the shot and sprinted towards the Lakers’ bench, where teammates awaited him with open arms.
“That guy is going to show up in the big moments,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick. “I’m not surprised. He’s done that many times in his career.”
This victory marked the Lakers’ second win of the season against the Timberwolves, who previously eliminated them from the playoffs last spring. Reaves noted the importance of the win, particularly after missing a potential game-tying shot in their last encounter. “That one felt good,” he reflected, contrasting it with his previous playoff disappointment.
Despite being undermanned, the Lakers are now at 3-2 for the season, showcasing a resilient spirit. “I’m so proud of this group right now,” Redick emphasized, highlighting the team’s improvement amidst adversity.
In addition to Reaves’ stellar performance, the Lakers received significant contributions from teammates, including Jake LaRavia, who scored 27 points on 10-for-11 shooting, and Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura, each adding 17 points. Reaves commended LaRavia, stating, “Jake was monstrous. I think that’s the best basketball game I’ve seen him play since he’s been in the league.”
LaRavia, who joined the Lakers partly due to his close relationship with Reaves, echoed the sentiment, praising Reaves’ leadership during this challenging stretch. “He’s a dog, he’s a leader, he’s a competitor,” LaRavia stated. “He helps rally us together in all the tough times during a game.”
As the Lakers continue to navigate their season without several key players, Reaves’ remarkable performances have not only kept the team competitive but have also captivated fans and analysts alike. He now finds himself among the top scorers in the league, trailing only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Looking ahead, the Lakers will aim to build on this momentum, with Reaves committed to leading his team as they face upcoming challenges. “There’s a lot of basketball to go,” he said, embodying the determination that has defined his recent performances.
