Aspiration Co-Founder Joseph Sanberg Pleads Guilty to Fraud
URGENT UPDATE: Joseph Sanberg, co-founder of Aspiration, has officially pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud in a federal court hearing in Los Angeles today. Each count could carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for February 23, 2026, at 11 a.m. PST.
This significant legal development follows allegations that Sanberg was involved in a scheme that defrauded investors out of a staggering $248 million. Today’s hearing marks a crucial step in a case that has drawn attention due to its ties to an ongoing NBA investigation concerning the LA Clippers.
During the court proceedings, Sanberg’s attorney, Marc Mukasey, stated that Sanberg committed these crimes out of a desire for Aspiration to thrive, saying, “he loved (Aspiration) and wanted it to do well.” Mukasey acknowledged that Sanberg “stepped over the line,” highlighting the complexities of the case.
The NBA is currently scrutinizing the Clippers, owned by Steve Ballmer, to determine whether there were any violations of salary cap rules in relation to a sponsorship deal with Aspiration. The investigation focuses on a $300 million sponsorship agreement established in September 2021, which included a jersey patch component and signage in the team’s new arena in Inglewood, California.
Just four months after the sponsorship announcement, Aspiration entered into a separate $28 million deal with Clippers star Kawhi Leonard. This has raised questions about potential collusion to bypass NBA regulations, especially following reports that Ballmer invested $50 million into Aspiration around the same time.
Outside the courthouse, Sanberg refrained from commenting to reporters, deferring inquiries to Mukasey, who did not clarify whether Sanberg would cooperate with the NBA’s investigation led by the law firm Wachtell Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Mukasey emphasized, “We’re just happy that we got through today’s proceeding and that Joe accepted responsibility for what he’s charged with. Others matters may play out in the future.”
This developing story underscores the intertwining of business ethics and professional sports, raising significant implications for the future of both Aspiration and the LA Clippers. As the case progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming sentencing and the NBA’s ongoing investigation, which could redefine the landscape of sports sponsorships and regulation.
