BREAKING: Fourteen individuals, including student-athletes, have been charged in a major sports betting ring connected to organized crime in North Jersey, authorities confirmed today. The New Jersey Attorney General, Matthew Platkin, revealed that the alleged ringleader, Joseph “Little Joe” Perna, 55, from Fairfield, is linked to the notorious Lucchese crime family.

Authorities allege that between 2022 and 2024, the betting operation processed approximately $2 million in illegal gambling transactions, with profits benefiting not only organized crime but also student-athletes involved in the scheme. This urgent crackdown highlights a significant commitment to eradicating corruption and criminal networks in the state.

Col. Patrick J. Callahan, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, stated, “The takedown of this organized illegal sports gambling ring underscores our unwavering commitment to dismantling criminal networks that profit from corruption and greed.”

The investigation revealed a complex network of bookmakers operating primarily in Essex and Bergen counties. Notably, Perna’s son, Joseph R. Perna, 25, of Oakland, was allegedly responsible for the day-to-day sportsbook operations, overseeing dozens of agents, including his brother, Anthony Perna, 23, and stepbrother, Frank Zito, 23. Other charged individuals include cousins, Dominic Perna and Michael Cetta, both 23, and several associates from across New Jersey and out of state.

Additionally, charges have been filed against William Medeiros, 22, from North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and Devon Shuster, 28, from Gainesville, Florida. Many of the defendants face severe allegations, including racketeering, conspiracy, gambling offenses, and money laundering. Perna’s wife and ex-wife are facing further charges unrelated to the racketeering scheme.

As this situation develops, prosecutors are expected to provide more information on the scope of the operation and its connections to local and national networks. The urgent nature of this case raises questions about the broader implications for sports integrity and public safety in New Jersey.

Stay tuned for updates on this rapidly evolving story, as law enforcement continues to uncover the depths of this alleged criminal enterprise.
