Newport Teams Fall Short in Regional Championships Once Again
The regional championship round concluded in disappointment for both Newport and Newport Central Catholic on November 25, 2023. The Thoroughbreds faced Campbellsville while the Wildcats took on Kentucky Country Day (KCD). Unfortunately for both teams, the results mirrored previous seasons, with Newport returning from Louisville and Campbellsville empty-handed.
KCD Triumphs Over Newport
Kentucky Country Day secured a decisive victory against Newport, winning 37-6. An early interception returned for a touchdown set the tone, allowing KCD to establish a 17-0 lead in the first half. Newport managed to narrow the gap to 17-6 with a touchdown pass from Jaden Conley to Kendell Buck-Barber, but KCD answered back emphatically.
The Wildcats struggled to contain KCD’s offensive rhythm, which culminated in a dominant fourth quarter where the Bearcats added 20 points. Parker Rudolph contributed significantly to KCD’s rushing attack, amassing 117 yards, including a pivotal 74-yard run. Newport’s ground game faltered, finishing with just 84 yards on 26 carries. Conley completed 129 passing yards but also threw two interceptions. With this loss, Newport concluded its season with a record of 8-5.
Campbellsville Defeats Newport Central Catholic
In a parallel outcome, Newport Central Catholic fell to Campbellsville, losing 28-0. The Eagles took an early lead, scoring twice within the first nine minutes on a 59-yard passing play and a 48-yard fumble return. Despite a strong season, the Thoroughbreds were unable to respond effectively, ultimately failing to score throughout the game.
Both teams have seen their seasons come to an end in the same manner for multiple years now. Newport Central Catholic finished its season with an identical record of 8-5, while Campbellsville improved to 12-1 with this victory.
As the community reflects on these outcomes, local support remains crucial for independent journalism in Northern Kentucky. Investing in local news helps ensure that stories about regional athletes and events continue to be told.
