Remembering David E. Brest: A Life of Passion and Dedication
David E. Brest, an esteemed biologist and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his beloved wife, Patricia Brest. Known for his unwavering support and calm presence, David’s contributions to the field of biology and his cherished family relationships will be remembered fondly.
Early Life and Education
Born in San Gabriel, California, as the youngest of three boys, David cultivated a deep appreciation for nature during family camping trips alongside his twin brother, Dennis Brest. His passion for the outdoors led him to pursue a degree in Forestry at the University of Oregon, followed by a PhD in Biology from UCLA. This academic journey sparked a light-hearted rivalry with Dennis, who attended USC.
Career and Impact
David dedicated 35 years of his career to teaching at the California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he inspired countless students until his retirement in 2003. His engaging lectures, particularly on photosynthesis, became legendary within the department, often resurfacing in family discussions. Friends and family fondly recall his ability to blend humor with education, making science accessible and enjoyable.
It was at CSUDH that David met Patricia, who was captivated by his intelligence and sense of humor. The couple married in June 1987, forming a partnership marked by love and mutual support.
Family and Legacy
A devoted family man, David was known for his loyalty and affection towards both human and animal family members. He approached life’s challenges with patience, whether solving intricate sudoku puzzles or navigating difficult conversations. His reassuring presence served as a beacon for those around him, providing comfort during trying times.
David leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, including joyful family camping trips to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, and Sequoia National Park. His ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove next to the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows, a fitting tribute to a life rooted in love and nature.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and stepchildren, Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, Casey and Jay Pabst, along with his niece and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Herbert Brest, his brother Loren Brest, and his twin brother Dennis.
David E. Brest will be deeply missed, but his spirit and dedication to family and nature will live on in the hearts of those he loved.
