Texas Senate Race Heats Up as Jasmine Crockett Considers Bid
U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett is contemplating a late entry into the race for the Texas Senate seat currently held by John Cornyn, which is up for grabs in the 2026 election. Her potential candidacy comes as the political landscape in Texas shifts, with Governor Greg Abbott predicting that she would face significant challenges if she chooses to run.
Crockett, who has served in the House for just two years, is weighing her options as the candidate filing deadline approaches on Monday. If she decides to launch her campaign, she would enter a competitive Democratic primary featuring former Representative Colin Allred and state Representative James Talarico, both of whom have established political credentials. Allred previously lost a Senate race to Ted Cruz in 2024, and Talarico is seen as a rising star within the party.
Abbott’s Predictions and Crockett’s Confidence
Governor Abbott expressed his belief that Crockett would be “pummeled” by the eventual Republican nominee, suggesting that her progressive platform may not resonate with the broader Texas electorate. He stated, “Jasmine Crockett about to learn the hard way that most Texans are very different from her district, her base & her values.” Abbott’s remarks indicate that he is looking forward to a potential matchup, which he believes would secure the seat for Republicans.
Despite Abbott’s forecasts, Crockett remains optimistic. She has highlighted her recent electoral successes and expressed confidence in her ability to connect with voters statewide. In a recent statement, she remarked, “I am very self-aware… I ask them, have you polled for me?” This self-awareness reflects her understanding of the challenges ahead but also her belief that she could prevail in the race.
Recent polling data indicates a competitive primary landscape. In an October survey, Crockett was reported to be leading Talarico by 6 percentage points and had a more substantial lead of up to 18 points over Allred in a hypothetical primary matchup. Should she secure the Democratic nomination, Crockett would likely face Cornyn, who is expected to run for reelection, along with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt.
Republican Landscape and Potential Showdown
The Republican primary is shaping up to be highly competitive, with Cornyn currently holding a narrow lead of 0.3 percentage points over Paxton and a nearly 10 point advantage over Hunt. As the race evolves, all eyes will be on the candidates’ strategies and how they position themselves to appeal to the diverse electorate of Texas.
As the deadline approaches, the political atmosphere is charged with anticipation. Should Crockett enter the race, the dynamics of both the Democratic and Republican primaries could shift dramatically, making the 2026 Senate election one of the key political events in Texas and beyond.
