Rep. Levin Raises Concerns Over I-5 Closures for Marine Corps Event
Rep. Mike Levin voiced significant concerns on March 6, 2024, regarding potential closures of portions of Interstate 5 (I-5) during a military event at Camp Pendleton. The Marine Corps is scheduled to celebrate its 250th birthday with activities that may involve live ordnance firing from Navy ships over the freeway. This closure could disrupt a vital transportation route that serves more than 80,000 daily travelers between Orange and San Diego counties.
Levin, who represents northern coastal San Diego and southern Orange County, expressed that the anniversary of the United States Marine Corps is a moment of pride. He emphasized the need for a celebration that reflects the values of honor, courage, and commitment. “It deserves to be celebrated in a way worthy of their legacy,” Levin stated. His concerns stem from reports indicating that I-5 could be closed for several hours in both directions on March 8 and 9 to facilitate event activities that may be perceived as partisan or political.
Heavy traffic is a common occurrence along the I-5 corridor, particularly on weekends. Extended closures would likely lead to significant congestion and pose challenges for residents, businesses, and first responders in the area. Levin underscored the importance of minimizing any such disruptions.
The event, titled “Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength,” is expected to draw approximately 15,000 attendees and will feature Vice President JD Vance. According to a military media advisory, the celebration will include a live amphibious assault demonstration. However, it remains uncertain whether any live ordnance will indeed be fired over I-5.
In a critical response to the planned demonstrations, a statement from Governor Gavin Newsom’s Press Office on social media described the military displays as an “absurd show of force.” The statement highlighted the context of a government shutdown that is currently affecting military paychecks, suggesting that such displays are inappropriate during this period.
As the event date approaches, local officials and residents remain attentive to the potential impacts of the planned closures on daily life and transit in the region. The outcome of these discussions may shape how the Marine Corps’ milestone celebration unfolds, balancing the need for security and public safety with the honoring of a historic legacy.
