Los Angeles Mayoral Race Begins: Beutner Emerges as Key Contender
The race for the mayoralty of Los Angeles is taking shape with several announced candidates, notably incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and businessman and civic leader Austin Beutner. They are joined by engineer Asaad Alnajjar and progressive activist Rae Huang, setting the stage for a competitive election. As the candidates position themselves, the dynamics suggest that Huang’s progressive platform could create challenges for Bass, potentially opening the door for Beutner, who is often seen as a more pragmatic alternative.
Bass entered her term with ambitious promises and a commitment to address pressing issues, including housing and homelessness. She initiated Executive Directive 1, aimed at streamlining housing construction, which initially appeared promising. However, the directive has faced political pushback, leading to greater restrictions on when projects can receive regulatory relief. This delay in housing initiatives has significant economic implications, as prolonged bureaucratic processes often inflate costs for builders and, ultimately, for homebuyers.
The fallout from Bass’s support of Measure ULA, a tax on high-valued properties, has also raised concerns. According to the UCLA Lewis Center on Regional Policy Studies, this measure is projected to reduce multifamily housing production in Los Angeles by at least 1,910 units per year, an 18% decline based on the 2020–2022 average. Such a decrease in housing supply could exacerbate the city’s ongoing housing crisis.
Bass has claimed successes regarding homelessness, but a recent study by Rand Corp. challenges this narrative. The report highlighted undercounts in the unsheltered population, estimating that only 68% of individuals living on the streets were accurately counted in three assessed neighborhoods. Amid growing utility costs, Beutner has noted that average bills for Los Angeles families have surged by approximately $1,223 annually under Bass’s leadership.
In addition to these challenges, Bass’s handling of the wildfires and subsequent recovery efforts has drawn criticism. Her strategies have raised concerns about effective leadership in crisis situations. Moreover, her policies for the hospitality industry, including minimum wage mandates for hotel workers, have polarized opinions, as have recent changes to the city’s rent control policies.
Looking at the other candidates, Huang, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has promised to push for “free” public transit. Critics argue that such initiatives could lead to increased expenses for taxpayers and a diminished quality of service for transit users.
Amid these developments, Beutner appears to have a clearer path to victory. His past tenure as superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District has drawn mixed reviews, but his pragmatic approach may resonate more with voters seeking effective governance over ideological posturing. Many observers suggest he could be a practical reformer akin to San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan or Daniel Lurie in San Francisco.
As the campaign unfolds, the next mayor of Los Angeles will need to prioritize the interests of all residents over the influence of special interests that often dominate city politics. Focusing on tangible policy outcomes rather than intentions will be crucial for whoever takes office. Currently, Beutner stands out as the only candidate who seems prepared to navigate these complexities effectively.
The upcoming race promises to be one of significance for the future of Los Angeles, with the potential for a transformative impact on its governance and policies. As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on the candidates as they outline their visions for the city.
