Ohio State’s Caden Curry, Max Klare, and Bo Jackson Shine in Rutgers Victory
Ohio State secured a decisive victory over Rutgers, winning 42-9 on October 7, 2023. The standout performers of this match were defensive end Caden Curry, tight end Max Klare, and running back Bo Jackson, who were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the team’s success.
Curry’s performance was particularly noteworthy. Despite a controversial ruling that denied him a touchdown when he stripped Rutgers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis and recovered the fumble near the goal line, he showcased a dominant defensive presence. The referees ruled Curry down at the 1-yard line, allowing Klare to score on an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Sayin. Curry led the Buckeyes with a total of six tackles, including two tackles for loss and two sacks. Additionally, he recorded a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, bringing his season totals to 49 tackles, leading the team in both tackles for loss and sacks.
Klare’s impact extended beyond the controversial touchdown. He topped Ohio State’s receiving corps with seven receptions for 105 yards and the aforementioned touchdown. His performance came at a crucial time, as the team was missing key players like Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith, and Quincy Porter due to injuries. Klare’s achievement is significant; he became only the sixth Ohio State tight end to register over 100 receiving yards in a game since 1960, with the last occurrence being Jeff Heuerman’s 116 yards against Purdue in 2013. Since Tate’s injury, Klare has excelled, accumulating 17 catches for 190 yards and one touchdown over the past four games.
On the offensive side, Jackson continued to impress, achieving over 100 rushing yards for the fifth time this season. In the match against Rutgers, he recorded a season-high 19 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was vital in leading the Buckeyes to a total of 254 rushing yards against one of the weaker run defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Teammate Isaiah West contributed with eight carries for 48 yards, while James Peoples added a 49-yard touchdown run, finishing the day with 55 yards on three carries. Backup quarterback Lincoln Kienholz also made his mark with 37 yards on three attempts.
As the season progresses, Ohio State is tracking individual player performances through a points system, assigning points for top game honors. Each player earning the First Star of the Game will receive three points, while the Second and Third Stars will earn two and one points, respectively.
This strong showing against Rutgers reflects the depth and talent of the Ohio State roster as they continue their campaign in the 2023 season.
