Maurice Man Killed in Lafayette Parish Car Accident on Sunday

A tragic incident occurred on March 3, 2024, in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle. Ricky Verret, a 37-year-old resident of Maurice, was walking on the right shoulder of southbound Johnston Street, also known as U.S. Highway 167, around 20:00 local time.

According to a spokesperson from the Louisiana State Police, Verret stepped into the roadway near Leblanc Road and into the path of a southbound Jeep Wrangler that was towing a trailer. The circumstances surrounding why Verret entered the road remain under investigation. Despite efforts to save him, he sustained injuries that proved fatal and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Louisiana State Police is conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash. Authorities are urging both pedestrians and motorists to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly in high-traffic areas.

Pedestrians are advised to use well-lit intersections for crossing and to wear reflective clothing when navigating near traffic after dark. These precautions can significantly enhance visibility and safety for those walking alongside roadways.
