Today, December 5, 2023, marks Giving Tuesday, a global movement that encourages generosity and philanthropy. Established in 2012, this day inspires millions to contribute to nonprofits and community causes through donations, volunteering, and acts of kindness. For many organizations, including the Zonta Club of Kauai, it symbolizes the beginning of the year-end fundraising season.

The Zonta Club of Kauai is mobilizing support for local families in need this holiday season. Through their Christmas Fund, donations are collected and utilized to purchase gift certificates that are distributed to families facing challenges. This initiative not only provides material support but also fosters a sense of community during the festive period.

Highlighting Families in Need

Throughout the lead-up to Christmas, The Garden Island will feature daily stories about families who would greatly benefit from assistance. The first family highlighted is the King family, consisting of two parents and their four children, ranging from preschool to high school age. Both parents are active in their community and church, teaching their children the importance of service. Unfortunately, they recently faced significant difficulties, including the loss of their long-term home and a medical procedure that will leave one parent unable to work for six weeks just before the holidays. A little help would significantly ease their burden during this challenging time.

Another poignant story is that of Mrs. Rogers, who has been the sole caregiver for her two grandchildren for the past decade. After the loss of her husband, she has dedicated herself to ensuring her grandchildren thrive academically and socially. Despite her best efforts, the challenges of being the primary caregiver have left her in need of additional support this holiday season.

One particularly urgent situation involves a mother currently without a stable home. She is working diligently on housing applications while caring for her three-month-old baby. This mother faces significant challenges, including the need for basic hygiene supplies, baby necessities, and clothing for job interviews as she seeks employment.

Larias Ronald, a single mother of four, is also seeking assistance. After complications during childbirth, she has been unable to work and is striving to provide for her children, who are in need of new clothing and holiday gifts. Her recent struggles with postpartum recovery have compounded the difficulties she faces, making community support vital.

How to Contribute

Every contribution to the Christmas Fund is carefully documented, with no administrative costs; all funds go directly to purchasing gifts and groceries for those in need. Individuals or groups wishing to hold fundraisers for the Christmas Fund are encouraged to reach out, as the Zonta Club of Kauai is eager to promote these initiatives. Donations of $200 or more will be recognized, with the opportunity for donors’ photos to be published in The Garden Island.

Contributions can be made through the website https://zonta.vbotickets.com/donations/7678 or by sending checks payable to The Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation at P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766.

As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of giving is more important than ever. Together, the community can make a meaningful impact on the lives of families in need, demonstrating that generosity knows no bounds.
