Brooklyn Borough Hall Distributes 60,000 Pounds of Food for Thanksgiving
Brooklyn Borough Hall spearheaded a significant initiative on November 21, 2023, distributing over 60,000 pounds of food to families in need as part of a Thanksgiving food distribution event. This effort was led by Borough President Antonio Reynoso and his team, aiming to alleviate food insecurity exacerbated by the ongoing affordability crisis and a recent freeze in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the federal government shutdown.
The event successfully provided essential items, including turkeys, fresh produce such as sweet potatoes, corn, apples, and onions, as well as nonperishable staples like pasta and rice. More than 125 organizations dedicated to combating food insecurity and homelessness received these donations. Participating groups included houses of worship, community kitchens, nonprofits, and other community organizations across Brooklyn.
Collaborative Efforts to Support the Community
In collaboration with various partners, including National Grid, Optimum, Ponce Bank, Citizens, Met Council, Macerich, Food Bazaar, and the Hispanic Federation, Borough Hall raised more funds than in previous years for this initiative. Organizations had to pre-register to participate, highlighting the importance of organizing food distribution effectively.
Reynoso emphasized the critical timing of this event, stating, “The distribution event comes at a time when food insecurity is high. The national government has made clear its intentions to cut SNAP benefits.” He assured residents that his administration is ready to support families facing these challenges. “We will keep doing this type of work every week to ensure that people are fed,” he added, reinforcing the message that local government is committed to its community.
The logistics of the event were impressive, with volunteers, including Borough Hall staff and community members, efficiently packing trolleys with food before loading them into vehicles. This assembly line of charitable efforts took place in Borough Hall Plaza, showcasing the power of community collaboration.
Volunteers Rally for Thanksgiving Spirit
Among the dedicated volunteers were players from the New York Liberty, including guards Natasha Cloud and Rebekah Gardner, who actively participated in loading food onto vehicles. Cloud, who expressed her appreciation for family gatherings, remarked on the importance of being thankful during challenging times. “I think it is crucial to remind ourselves how blessed we truly are,” she said, acknowledging the hard work of local leaders like Deputy Borough President Kim Council.
Gardner shared her enthusiasm for Thanksgiving, a holiday she values for its focus on gratitude. “It’s awesome that there’s a day to recognize it, where you get to spend time with your family and give back,” she said, encouraging more community events aimed at aiding those in need.
Volunteers from various groups, including the “Brownsville In Violence Out” (BIVO) organization, were also present. Participants like Mel Quan emphasized the joy of giving back, stating, “I just like to be a better version of myself every day.” Another volunteer from BIVO, Kemori, mentioned that they planned to distribute turkeys in their community leading up to the holiday.
The sense of community support was palpable, with even newlyweds Patrick and Kelly pausing to help while capturing wedding photos on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall. “It’s tough times right now, so this is definitely great,” Patrick remarked, reflecting the spirit of unity that characterized the day.
This Thanksgiving event not only provided necessary resources for families struggling with food insecurity but also fostered a sense of community and support among Brooklyn residents. The collaboration among local officials, organizations, and volunteers exemplifies a collective commitment to ensuring that no family goes hungry during the holiday season.
