‘Landman’ Star Paulina Chavez Discusses Ariana’s Heartbreaking Breakup
Fans of the popular series Landman were taken aback during the episode that aired on November 16, 2023, as Ariana, played by Paulina Chavez, ended her relationship with Cooper, portrayed by Jacob Lofland. The breakup unfolded after Ariana experienced anxiety over Cooper’s safety when his phone died at work. Still grappling with the loss of her late husband, Elvio, Ariana expressed to Cooper that she could not endure another tragedy.
In a poignant moment, Ariana conveyed her feelings to Cooper, who recently found success in the oil industry. Heartbroken, Cooper accepted her decision, though he later confided in Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton, about potential ways to repair their relationship, hinting at the possibility of reconciliation in the future.
Chavez shared her insights into Ariana’s motivations in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. “I really think she was, obviously, taken aback. The stakes are so much higher now,” she said. “She realizes what’s at stake with her partner working in the oil industry and she doesn’t want history to repeat itself.”
Ariana’s focus on her own healing does not prevent her from considering Cooper’s desires. Chavez noted that Ariana wants Cooper to pursue his own happiness, even if that means they must part ways. “If that means us breaking up, then that’s what needs to happen,” she stated, reflecting the complexity of their situation.
Despite understanding Ariana’s choice, Chavez remains hopeful about the couple’s future. She described their relationship as one that audiences yearn for, where both partners are unafraid to express their truths and strive for improvement. “I’m a hopeless romantic, so I’m definitely in it with their relationship,” she remarked. “I’m like, ‘Please, they need to end up together,’ so I’m rooting for them, too.”
Chavez has taken on a deeper role this season, portraying Ariana as “stronger, bolder, and more unapologetically herself.” This new arc allows viewers to explore Ariana’s journey through motherhood and her personal aspirations, providing greater depth to her character.
In discussing her performance, Chavez emphasized her commitment to portraying the multifaceted experience of womanhood. “My approach has just been really being able to fall in love with all aspects of being a woman,” she explained.
Although Chavez is not a mother herself, she drew inspiration from her oldest sister, who welcomed her second son in January 2025. “It’s been like a tradition that I just go out and help [my sister],” she said. “I was on night shift because that kid needs to eat every three hours and there’s a lot of diapers to change.”
Chavez views her portrayal of Ariana as a tribute to Latina women and mothers, particularly those experiencing love again after loss. “This performance is just a love letter to Latina women and mothers… navigating new love and how scary that can be,” she stated.
New episodes of Landman are available on Paramount+ every Sunday at 03:00 ET, inviting fans to continue following the emotional journeys of their favorite characters.
