Diane Lane recently shared her experiences while filming the iconic 1983 movie The Outsiders, revealing the challenges of being one of the few women on set. Speaking on the October 29 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Lane, now 60, described the atmosphere as “too much testosterone for one girl” but also noted the excitement of working alongside a talented ensemble of young male actors.

Based on S.E. Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders tells the story of the “Greasers,” a group of working-class teens, who clash with the wealthier “Socs.” Lane played Cherry, the girlfriend of a Soc, who finds herself drawn into the tension between the rival factions. Reflecting on her time during the film’s production, Lane mentioned, “It was hot! It was great.” Despite the challenges, she felt a sense of awe amidst the predominantly male cast, which included future Hollywood stars like Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Ralph Macchio.

Lane recounted her observations during the long night shoots, saying, “It was interesting being on set with all the boys… you could sit back and just observe the male dynamics.” Her recollections highlighted the blend of camaraderie and competition that characterized the set, adding depth to her understanding of the filmmaking process.

In a separate interview with People, Lane elaborated on the unique male energy, describing it as a mix of acting and roughhousing, which kept the atmosphere lively. “There was so much to observe. I’m still kind of back there, people-watching,” she said.

Interestingly, another Hollywood star, Jennifer Lopez, revealed on The Howard Stern Show that she was initially offered the role that ultimately went to Lane. Jokingly, Lopez remarked, “It haunts me a little bit because it’s, like, the one that I turned down.” She expressed regret, questioning her decision at the time.

Following her role in The Outsiders, Lane’s career flourished, leading to notable performances, including her Academy Award-nominated role in Unfaithful.

Current Projects and Themes

Lane is currently promoting her latest film, Anniversary, which also features Phoebe Dynevor and Kyle Chandler. The film explores the complexities of family dynamics as a couple reunites annually with their children to celebrate their anniversary. However, tensions arise when their son introduces his girlfriend, who is part of a controversial movement known as the Change.

In an October interview with CBS Mornings, Lane discussed the film’s themes, emphasizing the importance of empathy in communication. “I think that silencing people can radicalize people… it’s more important that we listen to each other,” she stated. She further remarked, “You don’t go to war with people whose moccasins you’ve walked in a mile,” underscoring her belief in compassion and understanding.

As Lane continues to navigate her career, she remains a significant figure in Hollywood, bridging the gap between past and present while advocating for meaningful conversations in her latest work.
