Mirate Expands with New Location in Los Angeles Arts District
Mirate, the popular Mexican restaurant and bar known for its innovative cuisine, is expanding with a new location in the Arts District of Los Angeles. The second establishment will be situated at 530 S. Mateo Street, occupying a ground-floor space within a 35-story mixed-use building currently under construction. This development follows the recent approval by the Los Angeles City Planning Department.
The new Mirate will offer a full range of alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption and will operate daily from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. The restaurant will feature a spacious 4,936-square-foot dining area with 182 indoor seats and a 745-square-foot patio that accommodates 40 outdoor seats.
Community Support and Culinary Vision
Support for the project has come from both the Arts District Neighborhood Council and the Los Angeles River Artists and Business Association (LARABA). These organizations endorsed the opening under specific conditions, including limited patio hours and a prohibition on amplified outdoor music. During a public hearing, Matt Egan, co-owner of Mirate, expressed that the new location will mirror the fine dining experience of the original establishment while contributing to the vibrant culinary scene of the Downtown Arts District.
The original Mirate opened in Los Feliz at 1712 N. Vermont Avenue, where it quickly gained recognition for its modern interpretation of Mexican cuisine and its extensive cocktail program focused entirely on Mexican producers. The restaurant has been named among the 50 Best Bars in Los Angeles and features a menu developed in collaboration with renowned chef David Castro from La Morocha in Ensenada, Mexico.
Menu Highlights and Beverage Program
The forthcoming Arts District location promises an ingredient-driven menu that showcases traditional Mexican flavors infused with a California twist. Dishes will be designed for sharing, featuring reimagined classics such as shrimp and fish ceviche, short rib fried tacos, lamb skewers, and rockfish with adobo. The dessert selection will include enticing options like chocolate semifreddo and corn cake with banana ice cream.
Mirate’s beverage program will emphasize cocktails, wines, and beers exclusively sourced from Mexico, aligning with the restaurant’s mission to highlight the rich diversity and craftsmanship of Mexican culinary traditions. As the new location prepares to open, expectations are high for another successful venture that captures the essence of Mexican dining in a contemporary setting.
