Connecticut Upgrades Historic Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry
Connecticut’s ferry season is nearing its conclusion, prompting the state Department of Transportation (CTDOT) to initiate significant off-season upgrades to the historic Rocky Hill–Glastonbury Ferry. Announced last week, these enhancements will total approximately $533,335 and will focus on safety and accessibility improvements at both the Rocky Hill and Glastonbury landings. This ferry, which has been an integral part of transportation across the Connecticut River since 1655, holds the title of the nation’s longest-running continuously operated ferry.
Key upgrades will include the installation of decorative fencing, gates, and lighting designed to enhance security when the ferry is docked and to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, the Rocky Hill side will see new sidewalks, ramps, and improved pedestrian connections to facilitate access from a nearby park. The implementation of benches and other amenities aims to create a more inviting environment for visitors and commuters alike.
CTDOT’s commitment to the ferry system extends beyond this project. “CTDOT is committed to the Rocky Hill–Glastonbury Ferry, ensuring it remains safe and accessible for all users,” stated Laoise King, Deputy Commissioner of the CTDOT. “These improvements will enhance security, pedestrian access, and the overall experience for the thousands who rely on this historic crossing each year.”
Project Timeline and Additional Details
Construction is slated to commence immediately following the end of the ferry season on November 30, 2023, with work continuing through the spring of 2026. The Colossale Siteworks Corporation has been selected to carry out the upgrades, which are part of a broader effort to maintain and improve the state’s ferry services.
In addition to the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry, the state’s second ferry, the Chester–Hadlyme Ferry, has already benefited from similar improvements. Other ferries operating in Connecticut, such as the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry, the Cross Sound ferry, and the Block Island express ferry, are privately owned and not under the jurisdiction of the state.
The enhancements to the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry highlight Connecticut’s dedication to preserving its historical transportation routes while also ensuring modern safety standards and accessibility for all users. As these upgrades unfold, residents and visitors can look forward to a more secure and user-friendly experience at this vital river crossing.
