Santa Claus Girls Launch Holiday Drive to Help 1,000 Kids
URGENT UPDATE: The Santa Claus Girls of Grand Forks are mobilizing for their annual holiday drive, aiming to deliver Christmas cheer to approximately 1,000 needy children. The initiative, which began in 1917, is gearing up for a critical delivery day on December 22.
As the holiday season approaches, community members are stepping up to support this long-standing tradition. The Santa Claus Girls, with the assistance of the Grand Forks Herald, have set a fundraising goal of $6,000 for this year. To date, they have raised $1,071.89 from generous donations, including contributions from local unions and the Grand Forks Clinic.
The Santa Claus Girls are not just gathering funds; they are also collecting handmade gifts and essential items to fill Christmas stockings. Volunteers have been hard at work since September, assembling gifts that include 75 pounds of peanuts, 120 pounds of hard candy, and 133 dozen oranges for this year’s packages.
Mildred O’Neil, the coordinator for the Santa Claus Girls, is encouraging anyone who knows of families in need to reach out. Names can be submitted to O’Neil at 775-6748. This year, the organization expects to serve around 1,000 children, although in previous years the number has reached up to 1,400.
Volunteers are urgently needed for packing and delivery. The packing event will take place on December 20, followed by gift package assembly on December 21 at 6:30 PM at Wesley United Methodist Church. Delivery will commence on December 22 at 8:30 AM, and volunteer drivers are welcomed to assist in delivering these crucial packages.
Support is pouring in from various community members and organizations. Target has pledged $250 in toys, while local firefighters and businesses are stepping in to help with deliveries. Notably, the upcoming December 20 fireworks display at Lincoln Park Golf Course will also contribute to the Santa Claus Girls’ fundraising efforts.
The Santa Claus Girls continue to embody the spirit of giving, with dedicated volunteers crafting items like knitted mittens, caps, and unique gifts. One of their most faithful supporters, Ingeborg Breiung, a nearly blind resident of Tufte Manor, has been known to knit countless caps and mufflers for the cause.
As the situation develops, community members are urged to donate or participate. Contributions can be made to the Santa Claus Girls at Box 6008, Grand Forks Herald, Grand Forks, N.D. 58206-6008 or dropped off at the Herald office at 120 N. Fourth St. during business hours.
This heartwarming initiative not only supports children in need but also fosters a sense of community and connection during the holiday season. Stay tuned for more updates as the Santa Claus Girls continue their vital work to bring smiles to children’s faces this Christmas.
