ABC13’s Melanie Lawson Announces Departure After 45 Years
BREAKING: Melanie Lawson, a beloved figure at ABC13 in Houston, has just announced her departure from the station after an incredible 45-year career. Lawson, who first joined ABC13 as an intern in 1978, will step away from her anchor desk at the end of January 2024 to focus on her family and new adventures.
In a heartfelt message shared with viewers, Lawson reflected on her journey at KTRK, recalling her first on-air experience that began with an unexpected report. “I came back and wrote up the story, got it edited, and handed it in,” she recounted. “The producer put it on TV without anyone asking much of anything.” Despite an initial outburst from the news director, she was allowed to stay, which marked the beginning of her storied career.
Lawson took a brief detour to law school before realizing her true passion lay in storytelling. She emphasized the joy and spark she found in journalism, stating, “The light I felt wasn’t in a law office; it was telling stories about the things that mattered to you and your families.”
As she prepares for this life transition, Lawson expressed gratitude for the support of her partner, John, and her family. “Being here at ABC13 is a path I have not walked alone,” she stated. She highlighted the invaluable lessons learned from her parents’ love story, inspiring her throughout her career.
Throughout her tenure, Lawson has had the privilege of covering pivotal events and interviewing influential figures, leaving an indelible mark on the Houston community. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a front-row seat to history in ways I never could have imagined,” she shared, reinforcing her commitment to telling the stories that shape the fabric of Houston.
ABC13 also announced plans to honor Lawson’s legacy, dubbing January “The Month of Mel,” filled with special surprises and tributes to celebrate her unmatched contributions to journalism.
As Houston continues to grow and thrive, Lawson’s impact will undoubtedly resonate for years to come. “There’s so much in our future, my friends,” she concluded, reminding viewers of the bright journey ahead.
For those who have followed her remarkable career, Lawson assured, “You’re stuck with me a little longer here, so don’t call dibs on my desk just yet.”
