Boston Distributes 3,200 Thanksgiving Turkeys; Resources Available Now
UPDATE: Boston city officials just announced the distribution of over 3,200 Thanksgiving turkeys and 35,000 pounds of food to residents in need, a vital initiative ahead of the holiday season. Mayor Michelle Wu revealed this news during a press conference at the Nuevo Dia adult day care facility in Jamaica Plain on November 20, 2023.
This monumental effort is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to support its community, especially during challenging times. “We’re so thankful to partner every single day to try to do whatever we can to take care of our community members,” Wu stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in meeting the needs of Boston residents.
In its third year, the turkey distribution program, led by the city’s Community Engagement Cabinet and the Office of Cultural Affairs, has expanded to include over 60 distribution sites across the city. Residents can receive not only turkeys but also essential non-perishable food items such as rice, canned corn, and pasta, ensuring that families have warm meals on their tables this Thanksgiving.
The city collaborated with major partners including Stop and Shop, Amazon, Roche Bros., and Goya to source the turkeys and food, illustrating a united front to combat food insecurity. “Ensuring that families have a warm meal on the table is something that matters to all of us,” said Jennifer Epstein, controlling owner of the Boston Legacy Football Club, who joined city officials at the event.
Residents are urged to access further resources for food assistance. For immediate support, they can call 311 or 617-635-4500. A multilingual Thanksgiving resource page is available at vitalcxns.org/food, detailing free community events leading up to the holiday.
Additionally, the City of Boston promotes ongoing food support through its Office of Food Justice, featuring resources such as after-school meals, the Double Up Food Bucks Program, and meal delivery services for those unable to leave their homes. Residents can also utilize the Food Source Hotline by calling or texting 1-800-645-8333.
As the holiday approaches, Boston’s comprehensive response to food insecurity showcases the city’s commitment to its residents. With the distribution of 3,200 turkeys and more resources still available, the city stands ready to support families in need, ensuring that no one goes without a Thanksgiving meal.
