14-Year-Old Killed in Chicago Shooting; Homicide Ruling Confirmed
UPDATE: A 14-year-old boy, identified as Armani Floyd, was tragically killed in a shooting in downtown Chicago during a chaotic “teen takeover” event on Friday night. His death has been officially ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner.
Floyd succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 10:59 p.m. Friday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Officials confirmed the shocking news, highlighting the growing concern over youth violence in the city. “No parent wants to get that terrible, life-altering call,” stated Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, addressing the media Saturday morning. “It is senseless violence like these shootings that makes us all feel unsafe, and it has left too many families in Chicago reeling.”
Floyd was one of two teenagers found with gunshot wounds on 140 S. Dearborn St. after an earlier incident. Eyewitness video footage revealed large crowds in the area moments before chaos erupted, leading to a stampede as shots rang out. Police recovered three 9-mm casings, a live round, and a fired bullet from the scene.
In a related incident just before 10 p.m., an unidentified gunman opened fire into a crowd of teens on the 100 block of North State Street, injuring seven individuals, aged between 13 and 17. The victims were transported to local hospitals in varying conditions. Some suffered graze wounds, while others had more serious gunshot injuries.
Authorities have indicated that both shootings are linked to a planned “teen takeover” that circulated on social media in the days leading up to the event. Reports suggest that teens traveled from as far as Dolton and Evanston to gather downtown following the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Millennium Park. Social media posts warned of increased activity and urged people to avoid the Loop area.
As of Sunday evening, no suspects have been taken into custody for either shooting. Police continue to investigate the incidents, and the community is left grappling with the immediate aftermath of this devastating violence.
The tragic events of Friday night have intensified calls for action to address youth violence in Chicago, as families and officials seek solutions to prevent such senseless tragedies in the future.
