In a vibrant fusion of circus arts and ancient storytelling, Mexican artistic director Jorge Díaz has brought the sacred Maya myth of the Popol Vuh to life through his performance “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a.” This innovative production, blending acrobatics and theatrical elements, offers audiences a captivating glimpse into the world of the Maya, as it recounts the perilous journey of hero twins Ixbalanqué and Hunahpú.

Díaz, inspired by tales shared by his grandmother during his childhood, emphasizes the importance of preserving these pre-Hispanic narratives. “Recalling those stories is important,” he stated, reflecting on how the legends shaped his artistic vision. The brothers’ journey in the Popol Vuh takes them to the Maya underworld, where they confront death itself and return transformed, a theme central to Díaz’s adaptation.

Performance Blends Art Forms

Since its debut in 2023, “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a” has periodically returned to the stage, with new performances held in Mexico City in late November. The production is the brainchild of Tránsito Cinco, a circus company founded two decades ago by Díaz and fellow artist Jessica González. Originally a theater group, Tránsito Cinco has evolved to focus on circus arts, creating a distinct identity that merges various performance disciplines.

“Our shows are built around a theme or storyline,” González explained. “We believe that circus arts can also convey messages about social issues or other subjects.” This philosophy drives their current repertoire, which includes 16 diverse productions, each aiming to tell a compelling story.

The theatrical documentary “Somnia,” directed by Arely Cantellano, showcases the company’s history and artistic vision. Cantellano noted, “This is one of the most influential art forms I’ve ever witnessed. It opens doors to many different arts and invites us all to take part.”

A Unique Artistic Vision

In “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a,” Díaz takes on multiple roles, including rigging work to ensure the safety of performers such as Yareli Reyes, who embodies one of the Maya twins while performing aerial stunts suspended by her hair. Originally, Díaz envisioned playing this role himself alongside his brother, who portrays the main character. He ultimately decided to step back, allowing for a collaborative atmosphere where he can engage with the performance from a fresh perspective.

“Circus has the power to astonish and play with risk,” Díaz remarked. He finds joy in the energy of the performance, particularly in how music, lighting, and the performers’ movements create an immersive experience for audiences. “It’s fantastic,” said marketing strategist Alba Vida, praising Tránsito Cinco’s ability to shift the boundaries of entertainment.

The performance, while inspired by the ancient text, remains accessible to contemporary audiences, including families and children. For one hour, “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a” explores themes of life, death, and rebirth, illustrating the Maya belief that death is not an end but rather an opportunity for transformation. The twins’ journey begins with their miraculous birth and continues through trials that ultimately lead to their rebirth as celestial bodies, symbolizing renewal.

Díaz emphasizes that integrating elements from pre-Hispanic Indigenous traditions into circus performance is vital. “There are many ways to reinterpret these stories and give them new meaning on stage,” he stated, highlighting the cultural significance of reviving these narratives.

As the company continues to innovate and inspire, “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a” stands as a testament to the enduring power of mythology and the creative potential of circus arts, ensuring that these ancient stories resonate with new generations.
