Max Verstappen clinched victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on March 15, 2025, overtaking championship leader Lando Norris right from the start. The race showcased thrilling speeds, with cars reaching over 215 miles per hour along the iconic Las Vegas Strip. Despite finishing second, Norris’s position allowed him to extend his lead in the championship standings, maintaining a significant gap over his nearest competitor, Oscar Piastri, who came in fourth.

Norris now holds 408 points, while Piastri, also driving for McLaren, has 378 points. Verstappen, racing for Red Bull, is in third place with 366 points. In a post-race interview, Verstappen expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Simply lovely, that!” As the 2025 season nears its conclusion, with just two races remaining in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, the competition is heating up. The upcoming Qatar event will also feature a shortened “sprint” race, offering a total of 58 points available for grabs.

Norris began the race in pole position but lost two spots in the opening corners after an aggressive defensive maneuver. He ran wide on the first turn, allowing Verstappen and George Russell to pass. Although Norris managed to reclaim a position from Russell, he could not catch Verstappen, ultimately having to ease his pace due to car issues later in the race. “I just braked too late. It was my eff-up,” he admitted during a post-race interview. Russell finished in third place.

Economic Boost for Las Vegas

Local leaders are optimistic that the race weekend will provide a much-needed boost to the Las Vegas economy, which has faced challenges this year, including high costs and declining tourism. The previous year’s Grand Prix generated an economic impact of approximately $934 million, according to estimates. U.S. Representative Steven Horsford, who represents parts of Las Vegas, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “It’s a very important event. We’re not just the entertainment capital; we’re the entertainment and sports capital.”

Formula 1 is keen to cultivate its growing fanbase in the United States, as evidenced by the addition of races in Miami and Las Vegas, alongside the traditional Grand Prix in Austin. The organization recently secured a five-year broadcasting deal with Apple, set to take effect next year, which will shift U.S. broadcast rights from ESPN.

The event attracted numerous celebrities, including musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z, actors Ben Affleck and Naomi Campbell, and NBA stars such as Magic Johnson and Jimmy Butler. Actor Catherine Zeta-Jones had the honor of waving the checkered flag. The top three finishers were transported to the podium, situated near the Bellagio Fountain Club, in a unique pink LEGO-built Cadillac.

In a memorable moment before the race, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton took Beyoncé for a hot lap around the circuit, with the superstar dressed in a custom Louis Vuitton racing suit. The two were seen enjoying the excitement from the Ferrari garage.

Rain Disrupts Qualifying

The qualifying session on Friday was chaotic due to rain, challenging drivers to maintain control on a notoriously slippery track. Norris, who ultimately secured pole position, described the experience: “You’re just trying to keep it on the track. Not crash. Not take yourself out.”

There was also internal drama among teams during the weekend. Piastri faced scrutiny after reposting an Instagram quote from former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, which suggested that McLaren preferred Norris due to his “high star quality.” Piastri later clarified that the repost was unintentional. “I woke up this morning and saw it. So I don’t know, maybe I accidentally did it,” he explained.

Ferrari drivers downplayed comments from chairperson John Elkann, who urged the team to “talk less and focus on driving.” Critics interpreted these remarks as a dig at both drivers following a disappointing season. Hamilton responded with humor, stating, “I wake up thinking about it. And I go to sleep thinking about it.”

Ferrari currently sits fourth in the constructors’ championship, facing stiff competition from Mercedes and Red Bull. While individual titles gain more prestige, the constructors’ championship is critical for securing financial rewards, with Ferrari having finished as runner-up to McLaren last year.

In an impressive comeback, Hamilton started the race in 20th place and made significant strides, finishing in 10th place after a strong opening lap. The Las Vegas Grand Prix proved to be a thrilling race filled with excitement, celebrity engagement, and pivotal moments as the 2025 season approaches its climax.
