UPDATE: The Colorado Buffaloes women’s soccer team has surged into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament following a commanding victory over Xavier. Hope Leyba delivered a stunning 40-yard strike that capped off a 3-0 win, marking the Buffs’ first Sweet 16 appearance since 2013.

With the win, the third-seeded Buffs now face second-seeded Michigan State on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT in East Lansing. The stakes are high as Colorado seeks its first Elite Eight berth, and the pressure is palpable for both teams.

“That third goal from Hope, what class,” said Buffs head coach Danny Sanchez, who has led CU to two of its three Sweet 16 berths. “It really took the heat and pressure off us.” Leyba’s goal not only showcased her talent but also solidified a dominant performance in the tournament.

The Buffs are celebrating a season that has come full circle, having previously drawn 1-1 against Michigan State during their season opener on August 14. Leyba opened the scoring in that match and has since established a new team record with 22 goals this season.

Historically, CU has faced challenges in NCAA road games, with a 2-10 record. However, their recent success, including a first-round victory last year, has ignited hope among fans and players alike.

“It’s not about us. We’re focused on our seniors,” Sanchez emphasized, highlighting the significance of this moment for players like Jordie Nytes and Greer Maguire. “This is a tremendous testament to their commitment to the program.”

The matchup against Michigan State is crucial; the Spartans are ranked as a two seed for a reason. “At this point, there’s not a lot of secrets,” Sanchez stated. “We’ll be ready on Sunday.”
