Detroit Fire Department Welcomes 51 New Firefighter/EMTs
The Detroit Fire Department proudly celebrated the graduation of Class 89, welcoming 51 new Firefighter/EMTs who have completed extensive training in emergency medical services and firefighting skills. During the ceremony, Chief Jamal Mickles commended the graduates, stating, “These 51 cadets have risen to every challenge we set before them.” He emphasized their unwavering commitment, expressing confidence in their readiness to serve the community with “courage, skill, and compassion.”
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms highlighted the graduates’ dedication to a longstanding tradition of public service. He remarked, “These new trial firefighters carry forward a passion for community, and many are following in the footsteps of parents and grandparents who served before them.” This sentiment underscores the familial commitment to the profession, which is particularly meaningful in a city with such a rich history of firefighting.
The graduates have undergone rigorous training, acquiring essential skills in areas such as fire attack, search and rescue, and Rapid Intervention Rescue. These competencies equip them to effectively respond to both fires and medical emergencies throughout Detroit, as reported by the City of Detroit.
The graduation ceremony took place at Second Ebenezer Church and was attended by notable officials, including Deputy Mayor Melia Howard, Chief David Nelson, and Councilmember Scott Benson. In her address to the graduates, Howard conveyed the significance of their roles, stating, “The badge you wear is a promise to the Citizens of Detroit that you protect them with every ounce of your strength and every beat of your heart.”
Among the graduates, Trial Firefighter Andre Vaughn stood out for his inspiring journey. After facing challenges early in his career, Vaughn earned his EMT license through alternative avenues before returning to complete the academy. He expressed his determination, saying, “I didn’t give up. I knew this is where I wanted to spend my career. I did the work, came back, and today I’m a Detroit firefighter. This moment means everything to me.”
As the Detroit Fire Department continues to build its ranks, the city is currently accepting applications for future cadet classes on its official website. The commitment of these new firefighters not only enhances the department’s capabilities but also reinforces the spirit of community service that is deeply embedded in Detroit’s identity.
