Pierce County has approved an investment of $857,250 to enhance eco-tourism and conservation efforts in Wilkeson, a small town near Mount Rainier. This funding, approved by the Pierce County Council on October 21, 2023, aims to expand Coke Oven Park and protect surrounding natural areas impacted by the recent closure of the Fairfax Bridge, which has limited local access and tourism.

County Executive Ryan Mello emphasized the significance of this investment, stating, “This investment expands public access to our region’s incredible natural beauty while supporting local economic opportunities vital to the Wilkeson community.” The planned enhancements include the development of new hiking trails, a historical mining tour, and the potential establishment of campsites across 139 acres recently acquired for conservation.

This project is designed to preserve the Wilkeson Creek ecosystem while also stabilizing the local economy, as detailed by Pierce County reports. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote outdoor recreation and education, which are critical for the community’s growth.

Future Development and Community Impact

Mayor-elect Jayme Peloli, who spearheads the Wilkeson’s Way Forward campaign, is actively pursuing additional recreational projects aimed at bolstering education and supporting the local economy. She remarked, “Through this investment, we’re creating a space where people can connect with nature and explore Wilkeson’s history.” This statement reflects the town’s commitment to improving outdoor facilities and enhancing the visitor experience.

The funding for this project is partly sourced from the Pierce County Conservation Futures program, which is dedicated to preserving land for wildlife, recreation, and community green spaces. This program plays a crucial role in ensuring that the natural beauty of the region remains accessible to residents and visitors alike.

With these developments, Wilkeson is positioning itself as a key destination for eco-tourism in the region, fostering both environmental stewardship and economic resilience. The planned improvements are expected to attract more visitors, benefiting local businesses and enhancing the community’s overall quality of life.
