URGENT UPDATE: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has sparked controversy with his recent comments regarding a protest against an event at Park East Synagogue. The protest, which included chants of “Death to the IDF,” raised significant concerns within the community about safety and free expression.

Just hours ago, Mamdani’s press secretary, Dora Pekec, stated that the mayor-elect has “discouraged the language used” at the protest and will continue to do so. However, his response has been met with criticism for being too tepid given the seriousness of the situation.

Mamdani’s remarks came just before he was set to meet with President Trump, as he emphasized that “every New Yorker should be free to enter a house of worship without intimidation.” His comments, however, took a contentious turn when he referred to the event organized by Nefesh B’Nefesh, which assists individuals relocating to Israel, as potentially violating “international law.”

This statement has raised eyebrows, especially as Mamdani prepares to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the New York City Charter. His fixation on “international law” has led to questions about his stance on domestic and international issues, particularly regarding Israel.

In a September interview, Mamdani indicated that he would instruct the NYPD to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York City, referencing an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC). He stated, “Being a city of international law means looking to uphold international law,” drawing parallels with leaders such as Vladimir Putin.

Critics argue that Mamdani’s interpretation of international law appears to be selectively applied, primarily targeting Israel while ignoring broader implications for American sovereignty. Moreover, his previous associations, including a visit to a mosque alongside Siraj Wahhaj, an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, have raised further concerns about his political alliances.

The protest at Park East was organized by the Palestinian Assembly for Liberation, which has made headlines for its extreme rhetoric, labeling El Al as “Genocide Settler Airlines.” This characterization underscores a growing trend where international law is invoked as a tool against the Jewish state.

As tensions rise, Mamdani’s comments reflect a deeper ideological divide within the community. Responses to his statements are expected to escalate, particularly as public and political figures weigh in on the implications of his stance.

Looking ahead, New Yorkers will be watching closely as Mamdani prepares to take office. His approach to international law and its intersection with local governance will likely shape his administration and influence community relations.

Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
