Preemie Project Merges with Wynter’s Haven to Enhance Medical Support
The Preemie Project will cease its operations as an independent nonprofit organization in 2026. Founder Mandy Booth announced the decision due to ongoing financial challenges. The organization will merge with Wynter’s Haven, a newly established nonprofit aimed at providing essential medical equipment to families with children who have special needs.
Located in Dothan, Alabama, Wynter’s Haven was founded by Kristen Lewis, who drew inspiration from her own experiences as a parent. Lewis’s daughter, Wynter, has required specialized medical supplies, including a gait trainer, which highlighted the significant delays many families face in obtaining necessary equipment. According to Lewis, “It could be six months to a year before you could get a medical stroller or a gait trainer or even a piece for the gait trainer, like what we’re needing now.”
The merger aims to streamline access to medical equipment for families in need. Many find themselves waiting extended periods for insurance approvals or coverage for devices they urgently require. Lewis emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “With everyone donating their stuff, we can give it to other families that are either waiting on insurance or they just cannot get it because they got a device six months ago or a year ago, and insurance won’t cover it now.”
Wynter’s Haven has already begun its initiatives by collecting and distributing medical equipment, although its official launch is scheduled for 2026. The organization encourages families with unused medical equipment to consider making donations to help those in need, thereby fostering a supportive network within the community.
For further updates and information, families can connect with Wynter’s Haven on Facebook. As the nonprofit sector continues to adapt to the needs of communities, this merger reflects a growing commitment to enhancing the quality of life for families facing medical challenges.
