CNU Completes Historic 10-0 Season with Victory Over TCNJ
UPDATE: Christopher Newport University (CNU) has made history by finishing its first unbeaten regular season in football, triumphing over The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with a decisive score of 27-7 on November 10, 2023, in Ewing. This victory marks a significant milestone for the Captains, who now hold a perfect 10-0 record.
In a standout performance, Colin Hart became the all-time receptions leader for CNU, catching seven passes for 101 yards. Quarterback Connor Barry, an All-American candidate, showcased his skills by completing 18 of 26 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 33 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.
The Captains, coached by Paul Crowley, dominated the game, extending their winning streak to 15 games dating back to last season. They are currently ranked 7th by d3football.com and will learn their playoff fate when the 40-team NCAA playoff bracket is released at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 12.
CNU’s first touchdown came from Zavier Kennedy, who rushed for a 2-yard TD with 7:20 left in the second quarter, breaking a scoreless tie after a lengthy 88-yard drive. Following a swift defensive hold, Barry connected with Josh Powell for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving the Captains a 14-0 halftime lead.
Barry continued to excel, scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 21-0 early in the third quarter. It wasn’t until 10:44 left in the fourth quarter that TCNJ’s Joe Visaggio ended CNU’s shutout bid with a 17-yard touchdown run, capping a substantial 10-play, 80-yard drive.
The game concluded with Barry throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass to White with just 1:54 remaining, finalizing the score at 27-7.
With their unbeaten record, the Captains are anticipated to receive a first-round bye in the playoffs and may secure a home game in the round of 32. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this remarkable season unfolds as CNU looks to make a deep playoff run. This historic achievement is not only a testament to the team’s hard work but also a thrilling moment for the entire CNU community.
