Monumental Sculpture Unveiled on 101 Freeway in East Hollywood
UPDATE: A stunning new sculpture celebrating the film industry has just been unveiled on the 101 Freeway in East Hollywood. This impressive 22-foot-tall artwork, made of galvanized steel, features three massive filmstrips designed to reflect the dynamic flow of traffic.
The sculpture, located on the median of the 101 south of Melrose Avenue, is part of the $5.87 million U.S. Route 1010 Lankershim to Beaudry Beautification Project. This initiative is a key component of California’s broader Clean California initiative aimed at enhancing state highways.
Designed by the Caltrans District 7 team and fabricated by Benchmark Arts, this artwork measures 23 feet wide and is elevated between 22-foot-tall steel columns. It utilizes laser-cut perforated metal to create a striking visual effect while allowing airflow, making it as functional as it is beautiful.
The installation, completed on November 12, 2025, represents a significant milestone in the beautification project that also improved landscaped areas around the on-ramps and off-ramps over an 8.7-mile stretch of the 101 between Lankershim Boulevard and North Beaudry Avenue.
Colleen Park, Public Information Officer for Caltrans District 7, confirmed that this sculpture is the final element of the beautification project, which aims to enhance the experience for both drivers and pedestrians in the area.
This remarkable addition not only honors Hollywood’s rich cinematic history but also highlights California’s commitment to public art and community beautification. As traffic flows past, the sculpture serves as a beacon of creativity and culture, inviting drivers to appreciate the artistic expression that defines the heart of the film industry.
For those traveling along the 101, this new sculpture is an eye-catching landmark that embodies the spirit of Hollywood. Keep an eye out for this stunning tribute as you navigate through East Hollywood, and don’t forget to share your sighting on social media!
